Trophic Levels and Food Pyramids

Trophic Levels and Food Pyramids are great ways to illustrate how matter and energy work up through an ecosystem, from producers to top predators and share a lot in common with food chains.

A "trophic level" is a number that signifies the position an organism occupies on a food pyramid, or food chain.

But why is a food pyramid shaped like, well, a pyramid? Check out the video and we'll break it all down for you. And just so you're not confused, we're not talking about nutritional food pyramids. No, this is a totally different animal!
