Battling with style with Furisode Girl Kali (Johto CS, Azelf + Latias LAs) [Pokemon Masters EX]

It's nice that they're continuing these event freebie units, and with Kali being an actual NPC from the main-series games, it opens up a lot of fun possibilities. Of course there's Youngster Joey and Heartbreaker Charles, but I'm more of an Ace Trainer Vito fan haha.

In any case, Kali has a pretty unique set of buffs, and Stat Leech 3 on her grid also gives her some interesting utility as a debuffer. The Type Guard passives littered around her kit give her some fun niches as a tank as well. But despite having regen on her trainer move and Draining Kiss healing, I do think that her sustain isn't enough to cover for her bulk, especially in longer clears.

Here's how each battle went, and the sync grids used:

Of course I was gonna use Kali with her gym leader, and there just so happens to be a Fairy-weak stage in this week's CS. Unfortunately, this took a lot of resets since Kali doesn't have the bulk to take Hitmonchan's Close Combat or Hariyama's Mega Kick, so I had to get lucky with the opponent's move selections. Once she's piled up the buffs though, Draining Kiss did a good job in keeping her going. Classic Giovanni was the crit buffer to see if I could get lucky with Bite flinches.

Kali teams up with another Giovanni here, and I do think she's a good partner to him as Giovanni appreciates all of her buffs, moreso in longer clears. Tech Alakazam provided flinches and activated the type skill.

Bede commanding Hatterene to use her Psychic powers to yeet Kali over the crowd is the single most comedic moment in Pokemon Masters history. Not even the montage at the end of A Pasio Spectacle - which was downright hilarious - can compete to the sheer insanity that was that scene.

I decided to let them team up here for a proper battle, with Hatterene using her moves on an actual opponent this time. Bede appreciated Kali's buffs so that he wouldn't suffer the stronger debuffs penalty of this stage, and Kali's own Stalwart and Stoic 4 protected herself from that penalty. Kali's Type Guard passives also came in handy here - if I had energy to get Grass Guard I would've.

How easy this clear is depends on how lucky you get with Stat Leech 3, which means I did a lot of resets for this clear. While Kali can technically take care of Fluid Fortification by herself, she needs a lot of help with sustain to do so, and you'll find yourself resetting a lot from unfavorable rolls. Sidney ended up being my pick for her duo partner here as he has Potions and a good sync nuke, and he can tank the sure-crit Earthquake with Endurance. Still, this took a lot of resets, and I may end up not even using this for Gauntlet since Sidney would be a better pick for Uxie with his confusion.

I like that Kali is supposed to be a tailor-made support for Valerie, but the lack of Crit buffs in today’s support metagame REALLY hurts both of them.

When they released both Helena and Naomi, who were technically new characters, I was a bit doubtful when everyone was hoping for the likes of Charles or Joey, but Kali completely changes that! I wouldn’t have expected a Gym Trainer to be our first generic character taken from a game, but I suppose a Furisode Girl would fit, given the outfits of most NY pairs

She just a weaker version of Professor Sycamore not that interesting hopefully they add Dwight the Cafe Master and Alcremie striker we need a fairy type striker that can do damage
