Coppercoat After Sixteen Years - Review by Westerly Merlin Owner

A visit to Deacons Boatyard in Southampton to look at about 15 Coppercoat-treated boats that were out on the hard.

The owner of one of the yachts was there so we chatted, and he has now sent us the following review/quote:

“Rowen” is a Westerly Merlin, a 28 foot bilge-keel yacht built in 1984. We applied Coppercoat at the London Boat Show at Excel in January 2008. Rowen had been chosen by the Westerly Owners Association to represent the brand as a good example of the second-hand market. We were able to apply the Coppercoat in the hall of the exhibition (before the show opening) while lying on a carpeted floor.

For the first 7 years, Rowen was on a swinging mooring in Poole harbour, and was lifted out of the water for 6 months in winter.

Since 2015 Rowen has been on a semi-drying mooring, on spring tides the keels are in the mud for about one and a half hours on either side of low water, and is out of the water for about 3 weeks in the winter.

Whenever Rowen is out of the water we give the Coppercoat hull a quick clean, and even after 16 years it is in good condition. We always recommend Coppercoat to anyone who asks, and at a cost so far of about £35 per year, it's a bargain.

What’s the max moisture rating you could have with copper coat? My Merlin had some osmosis but I have treated but I’m unsure if I should coppercoat in case I seal moisture in the thehull.
