What Is Phishing and How to Avoid the Bait

What is phishing? Phishing attacks are one of the most common online scams around. We’ve all laughed at the blatantly fake “Nigerian Prince wants to share his fortune” emails, but what about when you receive highly personalised messages from your so-called bank? The website looks convincing, they know your personal details – it must be legitimate, right? Wrong!

In a 2015 survey, 97% of people were unable to identity sophisticated phishing emails. What’s more, up to 77% of spear phishing attacks are said to target 10 people or less, with a jaw-dropping 33% of attacks targeting just ONE person.

It’s imperative to exercise extreme caution when it comes to online security. Triple check website URLs, never click on the links contained within emails and call the supposed sender – your bank, friend, family member - directly if you’re unsure.

3:43 Also make sure that you have the "international domain names" disabled in your browser. This badly designed feature will allow the phisher to register a domain name for their phishing website that looks indistinguishable from the real thing in a browser with the "international domain names" feature support turned on but if you turn it off, the same domain will look like utter gibberish.

3:37 Bad advice due to what is called "international domain names". Basically it is possible to register a domain that on the screen looks exactly the same as the legitimate one yet it is wildly different. If you use open source software, usually there is a way to disable the "international domain name rendering" and have it render the raw domain name (which would look like a jumbled mess) but most people in the vulnerable category use Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge which don't have such settings.
