I'm in IT. I love seeing entry level job descriptions for help desk. "We want someone who has 5 years experience. Has a ccna, a+, security+, aws certs. Python, java, c++, c# required 2 years each. Also a bachelor's in a related field."

The real requirement for help desk is a high school diploma and the drive to learn. That's all

Well they describe the role verbally and say that “yes actually it’s actually just A, B and C, the other stuff is nice to have“. You take the job, but then you have a job description that still has A through Z on it and you’re expected to do it all.

My very first team assignment at my new job (that I got following your advice) was to rewrite the job descriptions of the entire department! My director said our work to expose the chasm between the outdated job descriptions and what everyone actually does will likely lead to title changes and pay raises!

This is true. A job description said usability testing and testing users but the whole team was not allowed to interview any users at all.

This is exactly what I thought! I just had an interview 2 hours ago and they told me something in the interview that was not in the job listing. If I had known I would have never applied to the job in the first place, even though I'm overqualified for the position.

Even if you meet only 60-65% of the core fundamentals, go for it. Everything else is teachable . Also if you fit a job role 100% you gonna get bored very quickly because you won’t be as challenged and you won’t grow as much coz you already know it. You’ll be looking for something else in less than 6 months.

Yea, i also feel this say. They are always changing, the recruiter says one thing, the hr director tells you another.

The other reason to ask them to put it in their own words (even in 2nd and 3rd interviews) is that the person creating the description may not fully understand the position. I recently had an 1st interview with HR who created the job description. The second interview was with the manager over the position and come to find out the job description posted on line was nothing like what the job really was.

I'm negotiating an offer right now, partly because coaches like Madeline have given me the courage to ask for what I'm worth, partly because they didn't mention required overtime and on-call shifts in the job description.

this is the ABSOLUTE truth! I landed a contract job as a CAD drafter at an interior design firm (unfortunately no contract was signed), two weeks in and the expectations changed to include more senior-level responsibilities. They knew I didn't have that experience and they used that reason to eventually push me out after 1 month. it went from cad drafter to senior designer in the blink of an eye. they were figuring out what they wanted at my expense..

Dont forget jobs that require specific licenses for one job so one might as well get like 10 licenses/certifcates just to have a chance lol
