Q &A: Do Mini Phalaenopsis Stay Small?

One question that orchid buyers have is, “Do mini Phalaenopsis stay small?” Mini Phalaenopsis (or moth orchids) are one of the most sold orchids in big box stores among shoppers who’ve never grown an orchid before.

The tiny details of the “teacup” orchid fascinate and capture our attention, kind of like puppies do. But we all know that puppies turn into huge dogs over time and part of that initial cuteness is gone. Dogs are one thing, but what about Phalaenopsis?

Mini Phalaenopsis will not grow much more than their initial size on the market. They are already adult size when you purchase them, not a baby version. They might gain a few more leaves and add an inch or two, but not more than that.

Mini Phalaenopsis do not grow more than 6 to 10 inches (16 20 25 cm) tall.

A common misconception is that the mini Phalaenopsis is just a baby version of a bigger plant and will eventually grow into the huge plant. Another myth about the mini Phal is that they are sprayed will chemicals to remain small, but over time the chemicals wear off and they’ll burst into huge plants.

Both these ideas are myths. In this video, I'll go over 5 other myths that are also associated with mini-Phalaenopsis so you'll know exactly what you are getting into.

Happy Cultivating!

Loved this video. My favorite orchids are the minis although we have a Cattleya that is rather large and getting bigger.

My two minis that I have had for about seven months have each grown new leaves and many new roots but no spikes as yet! I repotted them after they were done blooming into four inch orchid pots.
Do not leave a mini orchid in that tiny two inch pot! That is for increased sales only. My minis had not grown anything when I put them into their new pots but they began to grow leaves and roots just a couple of weeks after they were repotted into the four inch orchid pots.
I have to say that it was not easy finding an orchid pot that small in the area where I live but I did find some on Amazon. They are actually double pots that have a slotted pot inside a regular type of plastic pot. I wasn’t too sure about them at first but the minis like them so….so far so good.
My issue is that my regular size orchids are both in bloom, the new one and the older one. and my minis show no sign of a spike! What is wrong with?? Are minis more difficult to get to spike??

Mini Phals are potted in moss because the pot is too small to accommodate other types of medium such as bark. For a plant this small, you don’t want something that requires watering every day. There is nothing wrong with sphagnum. Place it loosely in the pot and water when the medium begins to dry out.

Thanks for the video about mini phals. I just got one at an orchid show.
One question I have is about using garlic water as a fertilize for orchids. Would you recommend using that as a fertilizer?

Hi Amanda! I am glad you mentioned the amount of roots for mini Phals. My ascofinetia hybrid has more roots than the mini Phalaenopsis. My roots are a nice size and strong. The leaves are numerous and only shed every two years. My question is the leaves are large and starting to lean. Without a large number of roots like a standard Phal what size pot? Currently they are in the carousel pots by repotme, also known as orchitop pots which are 3.75 inches. Mix is Imperial gold from repotme. Great for my environment. What sized pot would you pick?

I have the Mini, I bought it with buds on, but they haven't opened in weeks? Good light and watering is under control. What's going on?

You said to use the "Cal/Nitrate" once a month during 'growing season', is that during the blooming time??

I have 3 rootless phalaenopsis orchids that I put it alittle water to grow some roots, also they have droopy leaves. Can you tell me approximately how long does it take to recover, to see some new roots, weeks, months, years?? Thank you.

I bought 3 mini orchids on sale on a whim. This sounds way too complicated to me. I'm sure they won't survive, so I'm not going to sweat it. Waaaay too much going on in my life to right now anyway
