It's a feedback loop of fear of death, that leads to more good actions, that leads to hope for salvation and eternal bliss, that leads to more action, because of the fear of missing out on the best possible level of Paradise that you could achieve, which leads to more action.. until the day when the angel of death comes, hopefully telling us to 'not fear and not be sad'.. Fear and hope should be balanced. If you feel you're slacking, lean towards fear. Otherwise, lean towards hope.

Thinking about it from a mental perspective not spiritual
Believing in God means more comfort in this life than an atheist who is always anxious worried scared don’t believe in destiny
While in thr hereafter perhaps a believer is in more worry than someone believe they are going to be just merely dust and no life after this

To be honest, having a religion is more comforting because we know that we'll be rewarded if we do good and we'll be punished if we do bad things. Knowing that hell exists is downright scary but knowing heaven also exists gives so much comfort. Heck, knowing that hell exists is also comforting because we know that it won't end well for evil doers. If being intelligent beings (humans) ends with just reduced to dirt after death and that's it, then what's the point of living?

You should know that some people are beyond not fearing death. They actually wish they could die fast bc they feel like their souls are trapped in this world. This Dunia is like a prison for the mu'min and like heaven for the kafir. Research about that and you'll get what I mean. It's about levels. Some people have reached a certain level that they wish they could die fast so that they can meet their creator and hoping they will be rewarded as promised, just like a student who studied very hard and waiting to see how great his result is.
