What if I told you there was a motorcycle chain out there which never needed lubrication ever again? What if I told you there was a motorcycle chain out there which only needed to be cleaned whever you decided to clean the bike? Welcome to the FUTURE! Meet the "M Endurance Chain"!

My 1970 Norton 750 Commando wore chains out very slowly as the crankcase breather functioned as an automatic chain oiler.

That’s great !!!! I’d put one on my ducati but it breaks down so much the chain doesn’t get a chance to stretch

My buddy has this chain on his BMW S1000XR with 8, 500 miles, and He has never lubed it! I was amazed that it didn't show any wear on the sprockets. The M Endurance chain uses a tetrahedrally amorphous carbon coating on the rollers that reduces friction and negates the need for lubricant. Also, I believe it needs to be replaced every 12, 000 miles.

Next year BMW 'no wheels on the bike' but you can buy it as optional if you want to ride it at some point.

Sounds too good to be true. No longer need to adjust the tension of the chain ever again? I don't believe it.

I had a fully enclosed chain on my Honda CD175 . Did 6000 miles in the lousiest weather, never tensioned it.

Interesting, I once was sponsored in the late 80’s with an RK supposedly $500 chain for a 250cc road race bike.
That chain survived multiple cuttings and rejoins for one year then was removed and fitted to a 600cc bike for another season.
That chain after the original stretch from new never needed adjustment ever!
Have never had a chain like it since nearly 40 years later.
Wish RK still sponsored me😉

Great idea! a chain drive is always going to be far more efficient than a shaft and considerably lighter too.

I use Pro Link chain lube. It was developed for mountain bikes. It’s very thin, you brush it on with a tooth brush while spinning the wheel, let it sit for a few minutes and take a towel and whip off any access. Metal soaks it in, it keeps the chain clean, lubricated and it doesn’t fling off, if you do a good job wiping off the access.

I just wonder how they solved the sprockets wearing issue.
Diamond coating sprockets perhaps?
Otherwise we end up having an almost indestructible drive chain while replacing the sprockets way too often.

Have a look at eastern german old MZ Motorcycles. They have chain casettes to fully enclose the chain drive and keep it clean and lubed.

Horse Feathers!
Put it through a Scottish winter's roads for a test.
I'm up for it BMW

I did an experiment once on 1290GT I owned - After I put the strongest DID there was I NEVER lubricated nor cleaned the chain. It did 12kkm before squizing a ring out and it only did that because I got few hours in rain. That little experiment told me that we are not that far away for a motorcycle chain that does not have to be lubricated.

I am skeptical. My experience with chains goes back to 1958 and my 3-horse Cushman scooter. BMW has not addressed the current shortcoming of even the best O-ring chains: contamination and wear of rollers and sprockets. My current ride is a BMW shaftie, but I have owned several motorcycles with chain drive, including the original CB750 that exposed the problems with inadequate chain drive on (relatively) powerful motorcycles. The unaddressed problem becomes apparent the first time you ride the bike in the rain. The front tire throws rain water mixed with road grit onto the bottom of the chain. The rollers efficiently take in this mixture, express the water, and pack the space between the bushing and roller with grit. After such a ride, try to rotate a roller with your fingers. It will not budge. Only tedious flushing, spinning, and lubrication of each and every roller will fix it.
The fix is simple. Install a good O-ring chain, or BMW's super chain if it works, and fully enclose it and the sprockets in a shroud that excludes dirt and rain. The fix is cheap and simple, but it will probably never happen because nobody wants their beautiful crotch rocket wearing a shroud that looks like a relic from a smokey 1950's 2-stroke 125 from Sears and Roebuck. Right?

You got those words correct! That alone was worth watching. Interesting idea for a chain. I wonder if there will be any extra wear on the sprocket? One isn't available for my bike, but they say that BMW is working on other size chains.

I had MZ motorbikes from East Germany. They had "nothing special" chains, but they were fully enclosed, so they also had extraordinary longevity and unlike the sexy gold and diamond BMW chain - they were super cheap.

Love it. I bought a shaft drive for no maintenance. Now I want this. Lol

I think it will just be reduced wear... so less chain stretch over a given time. I think you'll still have to lube the chain (for the sake of the o-rings).
