Here’s a few things I’ve seen and learned over the 15/16 years I’ve been around my, “guys” as I call them. It’s Thailand I live. I have guessed there’s roughly two thousand long tails about five mins from our house. I thought there was around 4-600 till about three years ago when one early morning there was, well, thousands on both sides of the mountain. There’s three or four main troops then the stragglers etc. I am not an expert, I’m a mechanic offshore by trade, I just like sitting with the l wee guys watching them. I can sit for four of five hours a day sometimes, feed them plain nuts. I do have a YouTube channel with a few videos of the wee guys. But I’m not here to advertise that.

I want to highlight that the Macs at my place do not jump up on people. They will take food out your hand.

Here’s my observations.

1. I have NEVER seen a baby monkey left alone. EVER..
Yes they play In Groups but family members and other monkeys are close. If I get too close they are picked up quickly by the closest monkey and sprint away. Which I like. So for these babies to be “found” is total BS. Especially at night. As when dusk comes in they head to the trees and there’s zero chance a baby will be left behind. Even if the mother has rejected it which rarely happens

2. The lip smacking with what I call the triangle face” where the chin comes out the eyes wide eyes rows pulled back and lips going like mad. It’s never a good sign despite what people say. It’s fear/aggression About seven years ago I was feeding the wee guys. There was a lot of them around me, well into the hundreds. I walked backwards and I stood on a baby, not with my full weight. As I quickly knew I had stepped on a monkey. Didn’t realise it was a baby. It was ok and it’s mother grabbed it up and sprinted away. It took a seat on a rock just above my head hight and did the “triangle face lips smacking to me” aggressively tightly holding the baby.
To this very day that mother does that to me any time I am near her even if she doesn’t have a baby. It just shows they don’t forget.

3. Injuries. I have seen some monkeys from baby to elder that have been in fights or taken a fall, I genuinely didn’t think they would survive, some with chunks out them, a limp or cut face looking like they are about to give up. But they do survive to good health, I’d say 70% of the time. My point being they are tough as hell. They do not need us helping. I have at time wanted to help one I knew were in a bad way. But I always feel it’s not my place. I understand some won’t agree. But it’s what I do.

4. Forgot to add this. “The Silence” When a Mac goes quiet in a siatuation you would think it should be screaming. The silence is part of the pain. I’ll try to get this across as best I can. In the past I have been feeding the wee guys and the others around me have strangly gone quiet. What I realised was there was a baby inches or feet from me on a branch that they are in touching distance, I didn’t see it as I always give the babies space in a tree. What all the other monkeys do is go quiet as not to alert me that I am close to a baby. Usually they All go mental if you get too close. But if you are within arms reach and there is no way for another monkey to rescue the baby or the baby to climb away from me they go deadly quiet. I feel when you see these evil people hurting them and there is no noise from the monkey it’s part of the “if I go silent they will stop”. I hope that makes sense?


Please. There are others outwith Thailand and Cambodia that are just as bad. The guy in Malaysia gets a free pass yet he abuses those poor animals. He’s destroyed them and 100% drugs them. The woman that puts makeup on the monkey. I despise her.

VITAL I TOTALLY FORGOT TO

People in South east Asia do NOT hate Monkeys and see them as vermin like we do Rats. Not even close. They are “used” to seeing them that’s all, as we are with ducks. Its normal to see them.
We in the West see them and are struck by the cuteness and cheeky ness of them when we see them online or on national geographic. So we are kind of in awe (for want of a better word) of them.

Believe me, they love the wee guys. My kids like feeding them, the wife comes sometimes, she grew up in the same area, she’s 50 so knows the wee guys at our house inside out.

There were rumours of poachers a few years ago stealing the babies. They were caught and did t do it again.
