There are only two differences between comic books and graphic novels. The first and most significant is size. 99 times out of 100, a "graphic novel" is a nicely ("square") bound collection of between 3 and 12 issues of a comic book that was sold on a monthly basis individually. In at least the comic-slinging biz, we call them "trades, " short for trade-paper-sized compilations, as the length and width of your average comic book or graphic novel is about that of a trade-paper size paperback prose-only book. Some graphic novels are all-at-once one-shots, but that's comparatively rare.

The second difference is pretention. A comic book is a comic book is a comic book. There's no shame in them, and as has been made HIGHLY evident in the last couple decades, comic books are some beaucoup money-makers when adapted to movies and TV. Some you wouldn't even know unless you knew. Paul Newman and Tom Hanks starred in a movie called "Road To Perdition" that was based on a graphic novel...which was a compilation of a monthly comic book! Hell, it was even based on a famed manga (Japanese comic book) series called "Lone Wolf and Cub!" If you want to keep your nose in the air and look down on the comic book enthusiasts, then you read "graphic novels." Otherwise, you're reading a trade of your favorite COMIC BOOK! 😁
