Marvel Studios' What If...? Opening Title Sequence: Episode 1

Marvel Studios asked our team at Perception to collaborate on their first animated series, What If…? and design the opening title sequence for it. Our opening title sequence focuses on the different realities that exist outside of the one we know and all of the possibilities of what could exist in those realities. The medium through which we tell the story of the opening title sequence is glass, which is utilized to represent the timeline. With one solid piece of glass, we are showing images from this main timeline. However, once the glass breaks and shatters, we begin to see multiple different realities. The glass helps symbolize the branching of the main timeline into infinite alternate timelines with different characters and scenarios.

What If...? was really fun to watch and the opening title sequence was really good.

When he says “I am the watcher” it always sounded so creepy to me and I couldn’t put my finger on it until today when I re watched Candyman (1992) and it’s very reminiscent when Candyman says “I am the writing on the walls”. Something about the tone, the eerie music in the background. Very reminiscent, but very cool.
