West-Eastern Duo | Gerhard Müller-Hornbach | 5 Gesänge der Schirin

Показать описание
Khosrow the second, king of kings, was perhaps the last prominent emperor of Persia. His love story with Shirin, princess of Armenia, is a classic Persian tragic romance. Nizami dramatized this story in his poetry "Khosrow and Shirin".
In Nizami’s depiction of the story, Khosrow ends up marrying the Byzantine Princess, Mariam, in order to get her father’s support for claiming his kingdom back from the rebel Bahram Chobin, although he has his heart set on Shirin. Shortly after winning back his throne, Mariam dies. Some claim, it was Shirin who poisoned her. With Mariam gone and after a series of heroic and romantic episodes, Shirin agrees to wed him. They live happily for years, until Khosrow loses his Kingdom to his crown prince, Shiroye, Mariam’s son. Shiroye who was himself always in love with Shirin and also afraid of his half-brothers’ claim to the throne, has them all killed. Khosrow was also not safe from his cowardice, fear and jealousy. He then puts Shirin under pressure to marry him. Having lost the love of her life and wanting to avoid marrying Shiroye, Shirin takes her own life at Khosrow’s burial. She is then buried alongside him in the same grave.
Gerhard Müller-Hornbach depicted the ups and downs of this great romance in five Songs.
