I feel genuinely sorry for people who are not emotionally intelligent enough to grasp this film. I truly mean this from the bottom of my heart. It’s the definition of a masterpiece, the equivalent of a dark side of the moon or Sargent peppers. The greatest war movie ever made.

The death of private Witt the Jim Caviezel character is one of the most moving deaths in any war movie. He is very calm, the point being he hoped that when he died, he would meet death with no fear like his mother did. Amazing acceptance of the end by choosing to lift his rifle and end it quickly.

I certainly didn’t find the movie ‘boring’. Pretentious, yes, and the character of Witt was akin to dumping a random pothead into a war zone.

The surrealistic framing of the characters ‘inner monologues’ was like philosophical musings being dropped in for stylistic effect.

From an artistic point of view, however, I can see why so many laud the movie.
