Love the video and at EP we stand them up for this repair also but remember to remove the battery especially if it is lead acid. We recently repaired two with MTD covered parts for recall.

Having now watched you video and Chicanic’s within hours, I should be getting a Masters Certificate on steering systems for those little MTDs. Will it be coming in the mail? 😊 Best take away from MM: reach around without removing the whole front. Best takeaway from Bre: pointing out how low tire pressure puts undue strain on an already weak system. Thank you both.

I had one for seven years. I bought a Husqvarna z5424 and sold the TB30 back to the original owner. I always used white lithium grease one the rack and never had a problem. It was like having power steering.

Very interesting that YOU and CHICKAN8C had the same repair on different makes & models.

I got a cub cadet in the day after you did this video, same repair!

I have used the Craftsman version of this rider for TEN seasons in Ohio. The steering has always been only a little sloppy since day one, but has never worsened. I clean that rack (see your manual) and use teflon dry lube spray every year. But, after all the videos here on YT, I decided that my steering rack MUST be worn, by now, and just decided to get the improved rack as it’s an inexpensive upgrade.
* Wanna know how it turned out?
1- the mower’s steering is a tiny bit tighter. NOT enough to really matter much, but it will be nice.
2- my old rack wasn’t worn AT ALL. Despite 10 seasons of mowing and the model’s reputation for garbage steering parts, the rack and pinion were as good as new!
Why? -after season one, I cleaned and regreased the steering as per the manual. What a mess!
-The next year, I cleaned again, then switched to teflon dry lube from then on. Guess what? Dry lube doesn’t collect grit from the lawn to wear down parts. Also- About every 3rd or 4th mowing, when I use the wash out port on the deck (religiously), I also use the hose to rinse off the steering rack. Just turn the wheel to each extreme, then spray. I also check the air pressure in the tires a couple of times a season. It’s good to know that flat tires wear the steering rack.
Let’s be fair. Every YT video blames MTD for a lousy design and cheap parts. Guess what? Owners who don’t follow the manual and maintain their equipment deserve a lot of the blame for the steering problems on this model. It might not be the Rolls Royce of mowers, but mine has been maintained and stayed solid for a decade.

Excellent video. I will be doing this job in the next couple weeks. It's unnerving when you turn the wheel and your mower keeps going in the same direction. Thanks! It's a nice little mower that's gone up $750 since when I bought it almost 3 years ago, so I guess I can stand to do some maintenance on it!

I have the same mower it runs great for 15/20 min and starts to run like it’s running out of gas and eventually stalls once it cools it runs agin for about the same time would you have a idea if there is a sensor or something going on bad once it gets hot ?

I did one of those a few weeks ago. They should stop selling the old kit without the plastic guide bar, especially the Chinesium Knock-off kits

one of my mowers is an old craftsman lt1000. Can I stand it up like that? I'm needing to work underneath it

Great job. Question, I've always wondered, should you grease that little pinon gear or leave it dry? Thanks!

After doing this it will not disengage from park but rolls freely and acts like it's not in park and won't start. Any ideas what I could of done

As I posted on Chickanic's channel, I did one on a TB30. When I was looking up the parts, all had a note "does not fit the TB30". Kept coming up for the TB30R. I ordered anyway and it worked, no difference that I could see. Same kit for all of these MTD machines.

What about a mower that weighs 630 pounds could I still stand it up?

Any issues with standing the mower on its end like that as far as the crankcase oil leaking into the carb?
