"Shashka" is the Russian pronunciation of the Circassian word "Sashk'ua" (A Circassian sword)
Russian Cossacks settled in Circassian land, they adopted the clothes (Cirkeska), the horses (Circassian Kabardian horses) the weapons (Circassian Sashk'ua) the fighting style.. even the name as some of them started calling themselves Circassians
Some decent Cossaks admit that they took all that from Circassians and other extreme or ignorant Cossaks deny it and claim them for themselves..
And because of them being ethnically Russians, Russia promoted the Cossaks to the world and kept the Circassians in the dark

In the video we saw two combinations. In the first, the attacker's cut went obviously above the opponent's head.therefore, the downward evasion was successfull.. With a downward diagonal cut this will not work.

In the second example, the cut missed the target. Counterattacks at tempo are good only if you are sure that he miss you and you are to hit him first. Otherwise there will be a double cut.
I understand that the examples of combinations were shown without protection and the "miss" was determined not by a lack of skill, but by security considerations.
