The register header for VCN4 has been found, and it supports AV1 encoding in hardware.

The efficiency of AV1 over H265 really depends on the source material.
Really the reason companies are using AV1 is that there is less licensing headache compared to H265

I spotted a 6600 XT for $370 and a 6900 XT for $900 on Newegg last night. The 3090 Ti Founders Edition was actually available for a bit on Best Buy as well, but the sad part is that anyone who snagged that 6900 XT effectively bought a graphics card that had *twice* the value of the former at $2000, even accounting for the performance differences. Funny how "RTX ON" has plagued this market so massively that Nvidia is still getting away with $600 3060 Tis and their clown league of the 3080 Ti upwards, all while AMD cards are finally dropping under MSRP.

I really hope both companies will find a way to not screw us all over with the next generations.

Why do you keep slamming AMD ? Wow people sure forget fast about what Nvidia has been doing selling directly to miners. Screwing us by setting high prices.

Maybe mention why the 5500xt doesn't have encoding. It was a laptop card that was released as a standalone. In that usecase the CPU would have been expected to carry the encoding/decoding.

Dear Bret, instead of making sensationalist videos wait a moment and see how the things pan out.. It has AV1 encoding

If Razer makes a 17" OLED model with 240+hz refresh rate, damn... that'll have to be my next laptop :O

What service supports AV1 input or will in very near future? Not having AV1 encode doesn't seem like deal breaker at all.
Decoding at the other hand, you really want since YouTube, Netflix and others are already using it. Also if you're buying a new smart phone research which SOC's have AV1 hardware decoding. I'm waiting a little bit longer to buy a new phone since most mid range
phones don't have it.

Yes even if ppl dont buy for content creation, its a marketing point to be known for it

I leapfrog my PC upgrades, so I just keep the last system-worth-of-parts as a streambox. Of course, my last system was a refurbished office PC I ran overclocked for the few years it was my primary system, so it decided to die before I planned to upgrade, but that's on me for pushing it haha poor lil feller

Intel doesn't have a gpu to decode anything. Unless I missed somthing, did arc gpus launch yet?

I doubt you'll find that any major vendor like youtube, netflix etc, are running their encodes on Windows, so Linux support of encoders will be a first class citizen, not to mention that all the plumbing for this is in place... More likely it's simply that it's hard to do in hardware, and the they are just behind in making the decoders... and since it's mainly used in streaming services as yet, the key requirement is decode.
That said, if Arc has AV1 encode, my planned upgrade for my Linux desktop just switched from AMD to Intel.

Why can't Microsoft put some anti-burn-in features into Windows? How about a taskbar that slowly changes colors, and window backgrounds that are completely black?

I love that Reese image.
He just looks so cheerful.

No encoder is just for 6500 and 6400 as those are quick GPUs for the market (very little R&D to push them into market).
No way RDNA3 won't have encoders
