Alban Berg Quartett and Amadeus Quartet set the standard of quartet music. The playing and the sound here are mesmerizing! And it was live recording at Konzerthaus, Wien!

Compared to social media musicians these days, these are serious music makers par excellence by not emphasizing showmanship.

These are remarkable players and they gave us a series of wonderful recordings. They are what a quartet was meant to be! When they lost their violist they tried to keep going but it was impossible.

There is something wrong here. All instruments are playing wonderfully. They are perfectly together in time. But there is something wrong here. Actually, I do not know what it is. It is somehow specific to the older Alban Berg Quartett that their playing does not give me anything. In their early years in the original formation, their music filled me with joy and fascination, they were one of the most amazing quartetts ever. If somebody could tell me what is wrong here he or she could teach me more on music probably than anybody else ever before. The deep meaning of music may lie within such an answer.
