I was wondering why the answer is always the values that overlap between the case and the x? Whats the logic behind it.

do these rules still apply if it has an addition sign also? for example what would ido with this: 1/(x-1) + 1/(x+2) = 1/2
everytime i attempt to do this I would get too many things in my denominator!
