For 60 years never missed a year saw all the greats come and go.
Now I am 76 still nuts for jazz and always will be.

Had the utmost pleasure to be at 3 Ellington concerts in the mid 60s. Got to talk to him…very approachable. As a student usher and jazz percussionist at Indiana University I weaseled my way into the green room between concerts and hung with Sam Woodyard, Paul Gonsalves and the rest of the band (Duke was elsewhere). I learned quickly they wanted to talk about anything but music. Looking back I marvel at their tolerance of this kid.
Every performance of this organization gives me a thrill. One quick story…while I was talking with Sam he strolled over to the vending machine and got and orange Nehi then pulled a pint of Dark Eyes vodka from his interior jacket pocket. Alternating between bottles he downed both in less than 30 minutes. When the call came to hit the stage Sam was staggering. I held my breath as he decided to climb the scaffold to its top tier whereupon his drums were perched. He made it but I was apprehensive re his ability to drive this dynamic band.……he never missed a beat…never faltered. As a watched in awe from the wings his timing was impeccable…his choices…musical. I'll never forget.

The best orchestra the USA ever had - and Duke Ellington was the most beloved composer in the World.

I'm 74 yrs old. This is the music our parents listened to or used to dance on. I've got some LP's of this great orchestra, but this video really adds another dimension to it. Love it. The same applies to Glen Miller and his orchestra.

Im crying so much. I just graduated from Duke Ellington School of The Arts and I rarely ever really listened or watched anything regarding Duke Ellington, and i'm now regretting that. I am glad to have fallen in love with this now though. #everythinghappensforareason

Without Duke, we never would be here, musically speaking.

This film is a treasure, the great Ellington band playing many of Duke's greatest compositions with exquisite care. Wonderful to hear and wonderful to see.

Yeah, Duke starts often the pieces with sometimes fantastical piano intros, that may be long out, but he always get to a suitable starting point for the orkestra. Thank You Duke for Your excellent music.

The definition of swing, sophistication and musicianship. A collection of genius original instrumentalists, fused together in a unit by Ellington's magic spell!

In addition to being a great musician and band leader, it is clear from this video that Duke Ellington was also a fabulous master of ceremonies.

Ray Nance's playing on "The Mooche" is perfect. The intensity he brings at a low volume, squeezing the juice out of those notes -- Brilliant.

Never before, never since has there been music like this of any kind! A miracle.

hooked on Free Jazz for the longest time, I almost forgot that the old standards are so expressive and kaleidoscopic . takes one right to the streets, the city, the "mishmosh" of life and stars.
