Silicon Graphics had two operating systems, GL2 and the later 4D1/IRIX. As I had to upgrade to 6.5.30 for my SGI O2 flat panel display adapter, let's also take some time to explore a bit into SGI IRIX history.

This third video in my series about the SiliconGraphics O2 Workstation restoration, I venture into the IRIX OS upgrade to release 6.5.30.
It can be straight forward, if done right. Though I'm pointing you out the two major mistakes when upgrading.
Also, it's worthwile to shed some light into the history of SGI IRIX, which becomes more and more obscure the further we go back into the past.

Oof. This brings back old memories. I had totally forgotten how _torturous_ IRIX upgrades were.

I've always wanted to see the very early versions of IRIX running on the very old hardware - even the 68k machines, those boxes seem rare (understandably) but the early SGI stuff is very interesting. The lack of information on IRIX 1/2 releases just adds to the mystery, I suppose like so much specialist computer equipment of the time though a lot of details are just lost to history.
