MOISTURE IN SOIL

On a hot summer day the air above the land is simmering. This is due to the presence of moisture in the soil. Due to the heat, the moisture in the soil seems to evaporate and the air above it seems to simmer the condense water vapor.

EXPERIMENT TO UNDERSTAND THE PRESENCE OF MOISTURE IN THE SOIL

Take a test tube, sand, burner and a test tube stand. Fix a test tube to the test tube stand and place the burner below the test tube. Put two spoons of sand in the test tube. The water in the soil evaporates on heating and condenses on the cooler parts of the tube. This proves the presence of moisture in the sand. Compare the soil sample with another soil sample which has not been heated.

WATER ABSORPTION BY SOIL:
Soil has the capacity to absorb water. But do all the soils have the same capacity to retain water?
EXPERIMENT:
Take a funnel, a beaker, filter paper, soil samples, and a beaker. Take a funnel and place it on a beaker. Hold the filter paper and fill it with 50gms of soil and place. Measure the water using a measuring cylinder. Now pour this water all over the soil using a dropper. Keep pouring till the water begins to drip in the funnel. Subtract the water from the measuring cylinder from the amount of water started with. His gives the amount of water retained by the soil.
The results of this experiment can be recorded as follows:
The weight of the soil is equal to 50 gms. Initial volume of water in the cylinder = A ml.
Final volume of water in the cylinder = B ml.
Therefore volume of water absorbed by the soil = (A-B) ml.
Weight of the water absorbed by the soil= (A-B) gm.
Percentage of water absorbed = (A-B)*100/50

You'd need to insure that the soil starts with no water. Put it in an oven for a few hours to dry it out first.
