No, the Greek idea was to let the Gods/Chance decide who would be leader by instituting the drawing of lots. That's about a million miles from the voting systems that are in place today. The Greeks also thought that the vote should be restricted to a certain class - an idea take up by the Romans (Cicero) and the American founders (the landed, property-owning class). Democracy has been exclusionary until very recently. PS: What in the expression "Universal Suffrage" don't you understand?

Actually democracy was built on the exclusion of all Athenians who didn't conform to the narrow criteria of the citizen: women, the young, the poor, foreigners and slaves. You are confusing universal suffrage, a fairly recent innovation (19th century), with a much older political form.

Your telling little omission (or is just pig ignorance?) of a whole sex speaks volumes, and shores up my initial point: exclusion, often on a completely unjust and arbitrary basis, and discrimination (in the positive sense of the word, i.e. it must select among the finest), are integral to democracy. I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make little man...
