Just sold my 50watt Smallbox after bringing home a Twin Sister. They are close in tone, but I’m able to push the Twin Sister’s power amp to a gigable volume without blowing eardrums. The smallbox gives you a tighter tone/super lead feel, and you can get a very similar tone with the Twin Sister but this amp gives you a depth control for the lower bass frequencies. I was a little worried about the sag due to it being tube rectified but it’s not an issue whatsoever. It’s perfectly tailored. Single lead notes bloom! Still punchy and throws those upper treble mids we call, kerrang! If you’re doing blues, classic rock…Stones, AC/DC, Clapton, Allman Brothers, even Hendrix…this amp is totally badass. Takes fuzzes and drives incredibly well. I use the first channel with the saturation/gain switched in the down position for a little bit of gain for slight breakup so I can use various overdrives, and fuzzes. Great rhythm platform on its own and you can use all your favorite drives for leads. Second channel is mirrored but with a little more volume, less bass, more mids to cut, and the saturation switch in the up position for higher gain. You don’t even need an overdrive pedal in this configuration. Cleans up beautifully if you want to use your guitar’s volume knob. I love that the tone remains full but the gain cuts back. It’s perfection! Dave Friedman is a maestro. He’s not only perfected the various Marshall British tones, he made a more quality built product, along with more versatility.

It would be really interesting what the Twin Sister would sound like with a built in harmonic/bias tremolo circuit similar to the old JTM-45s!!
Oh the possibilities to come…

I have both now/and yes they are both different but really close, both extremely fun to play and yes very expensive/but at this point in life it is really nice to have two quality amps to play live with or jam in the back room.

Thats a great comparison ! thanks for bringing the pedals in, i find it always interesting how the different amps correspond with the pedals. Like many others I have to decide between the two actually ;) Love the slightly compressed gain on channel two of the small box and the edge of break up tones of the TS ...may i ask you for a recommendation? Strat/Tele Player with a dirty Chillie pepperish Rhythm Tone and medium High Gain a la rage against the machine / Winery Dogs thanks for the Video !

When I was buying for myself I shot out these two in combo form, and it was a tough choice. I went Smallbox because I was worried I might tire of that enormous bottom of the Dirty Shirley. It really is a toss up, I would like to have both! I personally think both of these amps have more character than the B.E.100. Of coursethat is only my opinion, and I lean towards vintage voicings. Friewdman does not make an amp that soumds less than stellar. You couldn't go wrong if you tried.

Had the BE50 Deluxe and loved it. Especially the clean BB channel. One of the best I've heard. Sold it because I played a SmallBox and the character of the amp is more natural to me. Just had that true plexi sound with a little extra zing. Especially with a Buxom clean Boost in front. I've really got the British classic rock covered with the SB. If I were to add another Friedman amp it would be the DS or TS. Or if I could find a used Buxom Betty. Otherwise I'm quite content with the SB. The only thing I will say about it is the SmallBox does really sound best turned up a bit. That's where it lives, to my ears. All Friedman amps sound great and all have their own thing going on. It's hard to tell that in videos but in the room, you can hear and feel it.

The Dirty Shirley 40 (or Twin Sister) is Friedman's best amp in my opinion, especially running into a closed back 2x12 or 4x12. It's almost impossible to make it sound bad - it sings. It does the most glorious spongy breakup tones I've ever heard and when you increase the gain it saturates just so beautifully...It's my desert island amp without question.

I went for a Smallbox Head. Had the BE 100 Deluxe at one time but like the small box better

I love the small box. Box amazing amps though!

Great video! Twin Sister sounds killer! I generally play higher gain stuff but the response of twin sister seems to be exciting. Is it possible to push it into high gain territory while preserving the feel and without coloring the tone? Or should I just go with Smallbox? Thanks (:

I own the Shirley and prefer it because for 15 bucks I can make it a
Ss rectified which I did, but because it's tube rectified from the factory, you have the So you can make it super fat like a jtm or super tight and bright and lean like a jmp/jcm2204 or dirty shirley starts with the tube rectifier and a lot of bass which you can always pull frequencies out but it's not as easy to add them So if I had only enough money for one (my situation) I would and did choose shirley but that said the small box sounds great I doubt you'd be able to even tell in a mix the way they are dialed in this They sound very They feel pretty different though, but if u throw a ss rectifier in the ds/ts they start to feel similar Great video brother!

I pulled the trigger on a Small Box a couple months back. From clips and the like I was SURE it was the ultimate Friedman for me (already have.a BE50 and a DS Mini).

It arrived. I expected to love the plexi channel most. I liked the 2nd channel. The 1st underwhelmed me, very much to my surprise! And even Ch2 was a bit lacking for gain for what I expected. And the amp was LOUD. It has great cut, no doubt, that's part of it, but it seems the loudest of Dave's amps to me, and finding a good low volume sound....not so much for me. I had to send it back. It just was not at all the fit I thought it would be for me. Total surprise. Was kinda bummed. Made me feel inadequate for some reason but I shook it off and moved on. Don't get me wrong, I loved certain aspects of it but it felt more like a one-trick pony for my use and together with the volume issue (1 was like 3 on my BE50) and how it seemed so loud even in the house while playing in the garage, I just knew it wasn't the best fit...and I was already pining for the TS in the back of my mind anyway and knew I'd be going there one day. I realized that day had come! TS here I come!

Having already been so much in love with my DS mini combo, It was a no-brainer to exchange for a Twin Sister. (both the SB and TS I bought in Combo form btw with the new Red Back). The TS arrived and sure enough, it was instant fit for me. Has excellent low volume performance as my other two Friedman's do (SB had it too, but to my ear it just didn't sound really good until like 3, but 3 is OMG loud and cutting!). It has all the gain on tap I need for everything I do from jazz/blues to metal. It just has that quality like the mini that there's no bad settings, it's all gorgeous, usable and huge, big tone. And with higher gain it's a BIG HAIRY BEAST! (shout out to Michael Neilsen!). Strat. Les Paul. It is just glorious. It serves the guitar you are playing at the moment and lets it shine through. The usual dynamics and sensitivity we all expect from a Friedman and just spot on for all the tones in my head and heart.

They don't sound all that different in clips really, not like they sound and feel different in the room. I loved chugging on ch2 of the SB but the TS gets close enough with the new controls (compared to DS) and gives me so much more I just did not get from the SB. VERY HAPPY WITH MY Twin Sister Combo!!!

I guess I'm not worthy of a small box. C'est la vie. Twin Sister for me is my #1. And the Redback turns out to be a killer speaker! I'll be buying a couple for a 4x12 before too long. LOVE IT!

Great demo! I have the Small box wildwood which is fantastic. I ordered a dirty Shirley and liked it so much that I had to have those two channels of the twin sister. Do you use the depth or bright switch which is different on the twin sister?

When you got to sm box ch 2 I liked the harmonic’s that came though and lead was fatter, I though the twin sister was a bit thinner sounding, guess that would work better in a mix🤔

Which one seems to have more gain natively? Definitely an obvious difference in tone (and I assume feel) between the two. I had a PT-20, which had just enough gain.

Pretty simple question really. In person how much do these differ? can they mimic each other or are they both sonically and voiced in very different places?
I'm trying to decide between the 2 but the only place to try them is a 13 hour round trip.

The Peach Guitar videos make these amps sound vastly different where as in this video they sound pretty much identical.

I wish in a demo video .... just compare the amps with NO PEDALS. Why is that so hard? Seriously.

If some one put a gun to your head and said pick one twin sister or small Which would you pick ( you can't ever own the other one again or the guy who put the gun to head will come back and kill you lol)

Peter - which one do you prefer? To me the Twin Sister sounded a little fatter.
