I just love the idea of some guy holding a limb as it's being severed from the (still conscious) patient and think "this thing would be great for getting rid of that tree in my yard."

Of all the fascinating horror videos I've watched. This one was the one. While others have featured some fascinating and horrific events and disasters ....this one really ran through with the Horror with that one sentence.

They still use a device today called an osteotome. It's used for osteotomies where the bone must be broken. I know this because I almost had a PAO surgery for hip dysplasia. I've heard them referred to as bone chisels too.

This was, iirc, several decades before anesthetics were invented btw. Youd feel everything

Ah, those were the days! Back when the Surgeon's Motto was:

"If you can't use it as a surgical tool, you're not trying hard enough!"

You know, as soon as you said that it was used in the medical field it clicked! Using handsaws (bonesaws?) during the early part of the century during battles and war it makes sense that someone would want to create an easier-to-use device along the lines of what they already know. STILL not sure how a large device like that would be useful anywhere near a birth canal though D:

Of course, it is very commonly used in operating rooms as portrayed in those films that we don't like to watch before going to sleep.
