Pixel 4 Face Unlock vs. iPhone 11 Face ID Review

Back in 2017, Apple introduced Face ID on the iPhone X. It was the first real biometric facial geometry identification scanner. It couldn’t do multiple registrations like Touch ID, but what it did, it did even better — including and especially making authentication feel almost transparent.

Now, Google has just released Face Unlock on the Pixel 4. The basic biometric facial geometry identification system is pretty much identical to Face ID. It adds some extra hardware and software for extra convenience, though, but some of that is region dependent and it’s also missing a key aspect of operational security. At least for now.

So, which one is better and why? Let’s find out.

Face ID is truly amazing, people who knock on it either don't own an iPhone x or are not giving it enough credit. It's amazing because yea, for the first week of owning the phone you're more self aware of what's going on in the background but after that initial period, it's kinda like your phone is always unlocked and waiting for you to swipe up, its that fast now.

Now this is the part most tech youtubers lack...they are so biased towards Android and so much hatred on Apple that is far not ideal...ignoring a lot of the shortcomings of a phone while at the same time bashing another one for the same or for less...

To be fair all the pixels have copied Apple and they say they don’t need 2 cameras then make it and also square camera bump, notch last year, it seems like they have no originality, I do wish Apple faceID Would go straight to home screen

I have FaceID on my iPad Pro and i love it. Its fantastic. I do wish it was only one step tho! I dont miss the fingerprint scanner at all!

The only thing I worry about with facial recognition is that if it ever is compromised, you can’t change your facial geometry.
Which may not be an issue for the average person but could be for higher profile targets.

Its just as simple as it's already been done before. Apple made the technology wide spread so people just assume that since another manufacturer has brought it to their device, the core of the tech works similarly if not the same as such no reason to scrutinize it as much. It would be the same is Google implimented it first; if the public had found the initial company that implimemted it had done it poorly and there was a common or even rare security risk that could be exploited, then the second implementation and subsequent ones would be scrutinized.

TL/DR: Apple did it so well the first time that people just assume it is just as good the first time someone else does it.

FYI, the reason the Face Unlock setup is a bit more "fussy" than the iPhone is because the Pixel 4 has two flood illuminators, not just one and this allows Google's Pixel 4 to get a much deeper scan of your face, which requires gathering data from both flood illuminators and storing it in the security Titan chip. This is by design, not an "issue" or "error." The lockdown setting on Android 10 is only required one time. Once this setting is complete, you only need to hold down the power button and tap "Lockdown" for all future lockdowns of the phone.
