How to Keep Snakes AWAY from Your Chicken Coop

Over the past few years people have asked us how to go about keeping snakes out of their chicken coops. There are a ton of articles on the subject that often tell you to make your chicken coop a maximum security Alcatraz type facility where nothing can get in and nothing can get out. But that is often expensive and time consuming. Here we offer a few suggestions that will keep snakes from wanting to get in in the first place.

Great homestead info. Here in Oklahoma we get the black rat snake. Caught a handful over 5ft long in the coop and duck boxes. Keep in mind also in some states it can be illegal to relocate certain animals. As much as we love them sometimes you only have the "deal with it" option or dispatch option. Where I'm located this is it. You are not allowed to relocate. Love the shirt!

I just had a snake in the brooder pen and it ate one and killed one that was too big to eat. I thought for sure we had it snake proof. Screening, rat wire, heavy lid... and bam!! It found a tiny little crevice and slithered in. Big huge black snake... scared the crap out of me!

Great tips..! ¼-½" welded wire is great too. We put it around the outside of our chicken wire. We also put it along the ground on the outside of the run to keep critters from digging underneath it.

Here in FL, snakes are everywhere...even in people's backyards living in in ticky tacky neighborhoods! Snakes, raccoons (a big one visits me), and rats. I quit feeding wild birds due to rats so I'm worried they'll return with my chickens. They can squeeze thru most wire fencing, climb trees, etc...

Well... I guess we got some dumb snakes on our property. I caught a snake in our coop with a fake egg in it's belly.

we have big bull snakes here in west Texas, that work hard to get into our coups. I hate killing them so we really have to secure our coup. bird netting, small chicken wire. Lots of work but work the effort.

How does one physically bar snakes and mice from a coop? Is it possible? I don't see the rat snakes out here too often, but the last one was climbing a tree... can they get through hardware cloth?

We do all of this, some of it by coincidence, and yet we just dispatched the 3rd rat snake this week. It had more yolk than guts. Idk what more to do. 9 hens and zero eggs for a week now. I do think the ones we've found so far are too big for the barn cats however. The last couple days I was checking the coop every 3 hours for eggs and there were zero. Super frustrating when you're feeding and caring for chickens with no return

Thank you. Like, a real big thank you, but in small type. I can easily do all this. Best advice and not enough people have seen this video compared to the bad advice ones.

I get black rat snakes. I've had a single snake take my duck's fertile clutches twice now.

We have a few stray cats that come around but will they kill the chickens?

Cats against a 4 plus metres python does work. Wondering about effective methods of getting them out of the coup. Tried a rake but didn't work, poked sticks with door open to make it leave, but what's really effective???

Had a copperhead inside the run gate tonight. Our porcelain egg was laying outside the coop and something ate it.
