I am back with a new video - this time on Scott Joplin! 🎬

On November 24th, 1868 the musician considered “The King of Ragtime” was born. He went on to receive further lessons from Julius Weiss and studied only classical works. After deciding to quit his job as a railroad laborer, he started teaching piano and composing, attempting to establish ragtime as a form of classical music. He wrote over 40 original ragtime pieces and even a ragtime ballet and 2 operas throughout his life. His “Maple Leaf Rag” brought him international fame so he could move to New York and compose under much better financial conditions. Unfortunately, he developed neurosyphilis soon after, eventually passing away at only 48 years. His short lifespan nevertheless consolidated the style of ragtime, at the same time hugely influencing American popular music — with it, the yet-to-appear swing, blues, and eventually jazz.
