I discovered the original sample used in this song after some research. Someone suggested it might be from Tangle Eye, which made sense given the title “Phara Oh” or “Pharaoh.” Tangle Eye is a remix series based on Alan Lomax’s field recordings from the American South between the 1940s and 1960s, featuring work songs and spirituals traditionally sung by African American slaves. Spirituals often referenced Christianity, with the story of Moses and the Pharaoh particularly resonating with enslaved people. They saw a parallel between their own struggles and the biblical story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage, symbolizing their hope for freedom. I found the original sample is indeed a spiritual called “Pharaoh, ” sung by Sidney Hemphill Carter and recorded by Lomax in 1959, included in the album Southern Journey Vol. 1: Voices From The American South.
