Gonna have to agree here. I will write lists of ideas for ideas, then re-read through them...and when I find an idea that lights me up, I instantly begin working on it, and often times I'm soo juiced on that energy that I finish it in a single session.

I agree with this! Especially when if you are to do the stuff that excites you, that jumpstarts the motivation / momentum to push through the parts you aren't as interested in doing as well

REALLY love how you're optimizing each Short for looping.

I saw your year-ago video and I really like this new thought. And yes, you're right -- being willing to change your mind when it makes sense to do so is your most valuable tool as a creator.

The logic you'd given with "do your favourite thing last" was that spending too long on something that takes a few seconds and no one might notice can stifle actually finishing the project. That did ring true with me because I tend to get too lost on complex edits or something else that might require a whole lot of time. Doing those bits last did help me actually get some videos out TBH.

Finally someone said : "I changed my mind, i was wrong" instead of ignoring the truth.

That exact line was ringing in my mind while editing tge WHOLE time last week, I chose to ignore it and im glad about that

Very good insight. For me, saving stuff for later after doing the boring work as a reward is something I always reserve for non-editing stuff. For example, I'll go to the gym or play video games. In the mean time, saving fun editing stuff for the beginning and fun non-editing work as a pallette cleanser is what always keeps me going.

Even your shorts are brilliant 🙌🏼 I couldn’t agree more, brotha. It seems like when I crack down on a part of a video that perks me up, that momentum ends up getting the rest of the video done.

That's what I like to do! When I look at clips that are boring and particular scene stands out, I tend to edit it first and the rest rolls along :)

Thank you! Working on a clients project with well over 3 hours of RAW footage and was struggling on how I could actually complete the task. I’ve been mostly grinding through the boring part but honestly I’m getting a bit burned out but this tip will definitely come in handy!

Thank you!

I absolutely agree. Once you've got the good bits done and they look awesome, you want to finish the project to get it out there.

Totally agree with this, gets you fired up to make the rest of the vid as good as the part you’re stoked to put together!

I do exactly that . When I get stuck I get along with something that I like . Brilliant advice .

1. Doing the exciting part first for your personal projects/videos as it has no real deadline and you want it closest to perfect.

2. Do the part that excites you the most at the end for client works.. as you have a real deadline and you cannot be creative in that video cause client work doesnot offer us creative freedom anyways.

This is so true! As with any art piece or design, concentrating first on the most interesting focal point makes the rest of the design process come together so much more organically. What began as a chore can start to flow and become fun.

I cannot stress enough how positive is your learning attitude. I love both your podcast and personal channel, so refreshing! Cheers from Germany!

Can't believe anyone would ever give that first bit of advice to be fair. Always do what excites you unless you absolutely have to do the boring stuff to make sure you don't go to jail or something.

Thanks 👍 I think the shorts are a good idea at least we can get some crazy useful tidbits and Hayden doesn't get YT burnt out. Honestly I have very little video editing skills but this is so true, do the fun stuff first. I like editing B-roll and recently making intro and outro montages first

For me I think it's somewhere in between. I'd always aim to follow my process - dry cutdown, music pass, FX pass, etc, whatever the vid requires. If creative block hits though, I totally agree. When you nail a moment or a scene, it motivates you to believe the rest of the video has a purpose.
