What are your thoughts on boosting vs cutting EQ?

I used to be scared of EQ - now my EQ is purely what’s needed. Sometimes 0.5 db, other times 15+ dB adjustments. Massive cuts, massive boosts, shelves, bells. The secret is volume matching. And understanding the Fletcher Munson curve at 500hz. And referencing on terribly tiny speakers. And referencing with heavy compression and distortion on the master. Know your limits and destroy them so you can express yourself.

I agree, in the digital domain, subtracting EQ is easier on the dsp in terms of subtle artifacts; adding EQ is generating new information. Having said that I still boost all the time, especially for bringing out harmonics like with Steinberg Frequency; it has a keyboard under the equalizer for identifying notes values, very cool.

I think boosting and cutting EQ are both perfectly fine. As long as you get the sound you want, it shouldn't matter how you get there as long as you do get there.

What do you think about the UAD Vision Channel Strip?

Hi Warren, I have a pair of SSL 611s and a G Comp in a 500 rack. If I’m using these on my mix bus, would it be better to put them before or after the compressor? Thanks mate! 🙌
