But Who really owns the Panama Canal !?
At the beginning of 20th century, The united states wanted to build a canal to shorten the journey between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean with 11,000 km on the current territory of Panama, but at that time, Panama was still part of the Republic of Columbia. Because the Colombian government didn’t allowed the U.S. to build the canal on it’s territory, The united states decided to help Panama get it’s independence from Colombia which finally happened in 1903. Starting with 1904, Panama gave the U.S. control over a 10 mile wide strip of land to allow them to build the canal.
This piece of land was basically U.S. territory.
The U.S. owned the Panama Canal Zone and the canal itself until 1999 when they agree to transfer both the canal and the canal zone to Panama.
The neutrality of the canal is guaranteed by the treaty of Torrijos-Carter, which, because Panama has no military, allows the United States to intervene in case the canal neutrality is under threat.

As a Panamanian, I'm not surprised by the little knowledge of all of this.

Panama had already been independent in 1821 from Spain. We voluntarily joined Colombia, but then, we tried 17 times for a separation. Panama was very much forgotten, Colombia didn't care to better the region. We established a state twice. The second time, Panama had been independent for a year when Colombia changed their constitution and stated that Panama would be an autonomous state, so Panama rejoined. After that, tension grew. The Thousand Days' War started, and Panama was pretty much liberal, whilst Colombia was conservative. The war left Panama without any means of communication.

The French had been building the canal in the 1890s, but it was unsuccessful, so Colombia didn't want the canal built anymore. After the war, the US had made a treaty to build the canal, but Colombian refused. Then, the United States helped Panama by sending military to stop Colombian troops entering the country, so Panama became a sovereign country on November 3, 1903, and Panama, as a sign of gratitude, let the US to build the canal.

Colombia still claimed Panama as part of its country until 1909.

In 1963, Panamanians went to the Canal Zone and planted flags in US territory, so a barrier was built. After that, the US and Panama had agreed that the US and Panama flags would be both hoisted in every place in the Panama Canal Zone, except for military bases. In January 1964, the Balboa High School denied hoisting the Panamanian flag besides the US one, so Panamanian students went with a Panamanian flag, wanting it to be beside the US flag. That turned into 21 Panamanians dying, most of them students, the Panamanian flag ripped apart, and Panama closing any relations with the US.

In 1979, the Torrijos-Carter Treaty was established, stating that the flags would be hoisted together, and little by little returning territory to Panama, and that by 1999, most of the employers in the Canal should be Panamanian and that on December 31, 1999, all of the Canal Zone would be Panamanian. On the day, a gigantic Panamanian flag was hoisted in the Ancon Hill, representing sovereignty over all the territory, and it's still standing today.

To be fair, Panama did appreciate Americas help in giving them freedom and building a prosperous nation. In this case, America did a good deed

I can’t tell if this is a bad or good move by the USA. At least Panama got independence, but it just got independence because USA wanted a canal? Oof- At least the canal is useful.

As a civilian of the Republic of Panama, I want to clarify the part when we got independence. It really wasn't after all because the United States wanted, we had a independence movement since 1830, and we tried 17 times with atleast 2 successfull movements during history, and yet Colombia forgot about Panama, as we didn't had any cities or even hospitals. In reality, we got independence in 1903 and we didn't got invaded because the United States protected us. After all, if the United States would have intervened or not, Panama would be independent.

The fact that the US WILLINGLY gave up this massive economic trade advantage speaks volumes. They could have held on to it longer and used it as diplomatic leverage against other countries, but they did not

Before there was a Colombia, or a Panama, or a United States, a small country (smart though ) tried to build this canal. In the late 1600s, my country claimed a strip of land and an offshore island as a supply base and established a colony there. Of course our claim has no validity today. But that was the dream. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤

It's funny how all USA haters benefit from the sacrifices the US has made.If not for Great Britain and the US, Europe would be speaking German. If not for the US and Australia, all of southeast Asia would be speaking Japanese.
