Since debuting in 1987, Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week festivities have brought sharks into the pop culture mainstream. Building off the success of the Jaws franchise, Shark Week has taken a more documentary look at these magnificent creatures. Well, except for the megalodon and Michael Phelps fiascos. But is Shark Week lying to us about how dangerous sharks really are? Here's the untold truth of Shark Week.

every show has the same file footage. the great white breaching with a seal in it's mouth happens on every show. the clip has to be over 20 years old.

I know a lot of people know this but sharks generally don’t like the taste of humans and a lot of it is mistaken identity and most of the time sharks are hunted down and killed because of it

What's wrong with scientists reading scripted material? Politicians do that their entire careers and millions of people still believe THEM.

I have always loved Shark Week and look forward to it every year. I absolutely love sharks and think they need to be protected, loved and valued and it would be great to see shows that reflect that also in the line up on shark week, i promise it will not make me love Sharknado any less.

We dive in the Gulf of Mexico, off Panama City Beach, FL. We generally see Sandbar, Nurse, Bull, and an occasional Hammerhead. They are graceful to watch, and the only time they are aggressive is if you have fish on a stringer, at which point they attempt to intimidate you into giving them up. Don't; it just emboldens them to do the same to other divers in the future.
