Chorus with high gain is my ABSOLUTE favorite. Iron Maiden Somewhere In Time is the absolute best sound an album ever had, and that thing oozes with chorus. Same for You Got Another Thing Comin' by Judas Priest. Or the Turbo Lover Solo, what an amazing sound.

There are dozens of stellar tones I could list which have chorus on high-gain tones.

Everyone needs to remember all this stuff is about personal preference. If you hate chorus….you hate chorus. There is no right or wrong and telling other players what sounds “good” and what doesn’t does nothing but create these ridiculous “camps” of players that all begin to sound exactly the same. Metal music is particular cultish in its adherence to convention. Providing tips on how to use effects like chorus to achieve a certain sound if they WANT it is the value here and why I like this channel. Keep up the good work!! 🤘🤘

I think the rhythm tone on Ozzys "No More Tears" is a good example of a chorus + metal rhythm tone. Loved the vid, man!

Death used chorus on high gain amps, one of my favorite tones

Yeah the 80's hair metal guys used them a lot to get a really lush tone. I saw an 80's cover band use this setup with jcm800 and it sounded so cool. Adds a certain coloration. If you're getting a washy sound, you're doing it wrong. Apparently the 80s/90s guys used a Electro-Harmonix CE-2 or Boss CE-1

I think some chorus and delay on a high gain lead tone for single note work is the best thing ever.

the corona and the julia sound awesome! also your channel is convincing me that I need a mesa 2x12 for my revv, especially after dan said on that one livestream that the amps are voiced with the mesa 2x12 it makes so much sense why it sounds like a perfect combo

Had to subscribe to your channel considering how gracefully and constructively you handled my comment. This is a great video explaining how chorus can be used to enhance but not take over a high gain tone. As you mentioned, it was over-used in the 80's. I believe the effect that the favorite was the Roland Dimension D rack unit. I'm also fairly certain it's why Bob Bradshaw had to set up the center dry cabinets in many of the rigs he made for people so that the sound would have the immediacy and punch that was lost due to the effects. This leads me to another possible way to set up the downstream digital - with a parallel effect loop, which is what the GigRig Wetter Box is meant for. All in all, you've given me some food for thought as to how to preserve the high gain tone - but it has to be done sparingly as you mentioned. Clean tones - lay it on, dirty - easy on the mustard please.

The Yammadog SPX90 sounded great in the 80s added some great modulation.

My question is do you use chorus in front or in the loop with your high gain sounds?

Chorus on high gain is awesome especially it your chorus is going into two separate amps.

You nailed it. A little goes a long way. I add even less chorus, just enough to fatten up the chunk so to speak, especially after boosting a high gain tone.

The best “chorus” on high gain for me is a static detune. I usually go for flange for high gain modulation.
Even a bit of front end phase on a solo like Jake E Lee.

I love chorus (or modulation in general) with high gain...I grew up on it with Korn, Orgy, Fear Factory, A Perfect Circle, etc. When you listen to those bands you'd be hard-pressed to ever call those sounds "dated". They still hold up 25 years later. Maybe the old 80s way of using chorus on high-gains amps may not have stood the test of time, but the Nu-Metal genre sure as hell brought a LOT of effects that fell by the wayside back to life. So application and context is the most important thing. Maybe if you're in a blues band, a chorus pedal might not be the best thing, but I bet there's some dude out there (hopefully) bucking the trend, doing something different and really making good use of it.

Eventide micro pitch - look into that - I use a rocktron intellifex with the same pitch delio - a “chorus sound but not chorus” hmmm - width and space
