Since its creation, this nation has embraced several of its victorious generals so much that it elected them as presidents. Up until the American Civil War, most notably George Washington, Andrew Jackson and Zachary Taylor come to mind.

This, in the aftermath of war, is the story of another - a man who, like the president he served, came from the humblest of origins and found himself in this nation’s highest elected office. A man, who in many ways, found his political campaigns just as challenging - perhaps even more so - than his military ones.

With a tip of the cap in particular to William McFeely’s biography, this is the story of Ulysses S. Grant, who not only was instrumental in winning the American Civil War but in trying to win the peace that followed.

The epic legend of Ulysses S. Grant is utterly unbelievable. When you tell this story sir, I can almost see him in my Mind's eye you put it all into context. I have read so many stories and have been to many of the battel felids of the civil war. Thanks for the History lesson. It sounds like Grant was one hell of a man. Who wanted to do right by people. The end of this True story was very emotional to say the least. Ulysses S. Grant was a truly Great American.

Thank you for this excellent account of the life of U.S. Grant. As a Southerner I always respected him for his treatment of Lee, and the officers and soldiers of the Confederate Army. It helped set the stage for the peace and reconciliation that followed. He was a fair and decent man.
