The entire purpose of choosing “defer” is that you’re giving the other team the opportunity to make a mistake. If you choose “defer” and they say “kick” you get the ball twice. But the refs always kabash it. It’s a little known dance I think few people appreciate

For everyone confused.
Lions deferred the choice of possession/field direction to the Bears for the first half. The Bears could've chosen to kickoff to the Lions. Lions now have the choice in the 2nd half and could've chosen to receive the kickoff in the 2nd half. Effectively having the Lions receive both kickoffs to start both halves. The bears player was confused, and the ref helped him. Maybe some situations your offense is god-awful but your defense is elite so maybe you want to kickoff so your defense can give your offense better starting position, rarely if ever done though.

(Edit: Nowww I get it after reading other replies..honestly if that’s the case then the whole deferring thing is so dumb like why not just receive or kick to make it more simple n so stuff like this doesn’t happen in the future like I’m sure no team wants to kick off twice to start each half in the first place lol)
