Dwarf Fruit Trees are awesome and there are tons of reasons why the homesteader or backyard orchard grower should choose dwarf fruit trees. But, there is something they don’t tell you about dwarf fruit trees that you really need to know BEFORE you plant!!!!

I don't see these as Cons 20 years of fruit seems like a good investment... And then you get firewood! And mulch just bought a dwarf nectarine tree.

are you sure those peach trees aren't dying because they are peach trees? peach trees actually live 10-20 years. they are not trees that are long-lived like apples. so, the death of these peach trees probably has little to nothing to do with a dwarfing rootstock.

That's not a dwarf tree bud. That trees like 15 foot. Dwarf trees should never go over 10.

That's why you see ppl mounding mulch oddly high in "dwarf orchards", to stabilize the structural integrity given the shallow roots. Sometimes something isn't a downside if you know how to deal with it. Also just because the roots run shallow doesn't mean you can't build up the surface out pretty Darby mulching the whole area each year aside from the mounding

I just planted a dwarf Granny Smith apple tree

Should I plant a mate for it? (Another type of apple)
Or should I wait til next year.
We don’t have as much space as you which is one of our issues.

Good point Tom! I didn't think about it, but often the branch systems and root systems will mirror each other.
It may be a good idea to plant the dwarf fruit trees in a closer zone, because they may need more attention and getting replaced more often.

Thank you! We are planning on planting a few fruit trees in our suburban backyard. Leaning towards dwarf, but also considering semi-dwarf. We currently only have one pear tree that is probably semi-dwarf and is old enough that we are planning to remove it soon...we have put off removal the last couple years because it keeps surprising us with a larger crop of fruit than it had been giving previously.

Hello, I am just seeing this May 25th of 2023 as I am considering the possibility of dwarf fruit trees. I don't have a whole lot of room but I do have room for maybe three trees I would like an apple, cherry and I already have an apricot. However, I am seeing in some information where you have to have more than one of the same tree for them to pollinate and get fruit? Is that the case with all dwarf fruit trees or are there some exceptions to the rule

I was planning to plant some dwarf trees in our garden beds along the front of the house. But seeing the size of yours I am very concerned that they will damage the house now

Would planting one of these in a 100gal pot be sufficient to have a decent tree? I have to plant in pots to keep the gophers out lol.

Those dwarf trees are grafted. The "dwarf rootstock" is usually from a "dwarf" tree branch, which was air layered. Once the air layer roots are sprouted, they graft on the cultivar. So you don't really have a "real" tree, grown from a seed, with a root ball and a tap root. Those air layer developed roots, without a true root ball and taproot, just aren't going to be that strong or live that long.

dwarf fruit trees suck. id rather have the regular size ones that nature intended

It's also quite possible that fruit trees now/in the future will be more resistant. 20 years these days is light years in technology.

I've seen cases before where someone used air layering techniques to mound up soil around the bottom of the grafted tree and convert it from a dwarf to a standard.

I'm tempted to try my hand at that strategy deliberately. Start with dwarfs for a rapid harvest and transition to standard about ten years in.
