60 Seconds or Sow: First Leaves or True Tomato Leaves, What are They? - The Rusted Garden 2013

Показать описание
In 60 seconds or sow, I show you the difference between first leaves and true leaves on tomato seedlings. First leaves are the embryonic leaves of the cotyledons. They are the first two leaves that break the ground. The true leaves are actually the second set of leaves which develop in about 10-14 days of planting. They are the first set of leaves that look like true tomato leaves. You begin to consider transplanting your tomatoes when the first set of true leaves are well established.

Talking is fine, but an explanation should be short and to the point - and you NAILED IT! That`s the way to go. Real help instead of wasting time. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Thats a good way to say it. I was a bit confusing with monocots as their initial leaves as you state, like onions, chives and that family grow. But that became to much for 60 seconds.

I get them at Home Depot, Walmart or Lowes. I dont like the peat moss pots. They grow algae under the lights and dry out to fast. I like the plastic flats and cells. A whole kit should be $5 or less.

Hey Gary. My sister plucked off the first leaves of my tomato plant. My tomato plant is 7 days old. Wat should I do to save her?

No for me it is to 8 ounce pots/cells. They need to grow for a few more weeks.

I planted a number of different things last week (it's now March 3rd) and I am getting tiny cotyledon leaves on my basil and Safflower. I did not expect them to come up this fast which is why I planted early! Im in upstate Ny and I can't transplant into the garden in the next few weeks. Do you suggest I transplant the peat pots into something else? They are large peat pots. Thanks.

On some plants there is no or little difference between the cotyledon leaf and the actual true leaf ( for example onions). This is when things gets complicated. I jus call them seed leaves, in that way it is easier to say.

Hey Gary when you say when you see the true leaves to consider transplanting them, do you mean transplanting them outside? (if the climate calls for it) or do you mean transplanting into bigger cells/pots?

Gary, I planted my pepper seeds and placed them on a heating mat designed for seedling.  My question to you is, after the Cotyledon leaves develop, do I need to keep the seedlings on the heating mat as well as my grow light?  Also is your answer for tomatoes as well?  Thanks, Robert

I have tomarto seedlings that were doing well until tiny flies decided to have a feed on them 😡. I think they are called white flies. I have been spraying them with diluted dish washing liquid but it doesn't seem to be helping much. Do you have any tips please?

Hey, why do the cotyledons close at night? Is it to prevent moisture loss?

I planted the seeds on 27 July 18 but the the true leave are very small, smaller than half of yours, even after more than a month. I stay in Singapore, my room temp is around 25-28 degree celsius, I place them at my full length window, sometimes will place them out at the window. Why is the growth so slow. I watched many video, the growth is so much faster. So what can I do now?
