Number of Deaths in WW2 by Country

In this video, we will look at the number of fatalities during the Second World War from 1939 to 1945. The war involved the vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis powers. In a total war directly involving more than 100 million personnel from more than 30 countries, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. Aircraft played a major role in the conflict, enabling the strategic bombing of population centers and the only two uses of nuclear weapons in war. World War II was by far the deadliest conflict in human history; it resulted in 70 to 85 million fatalities, a majority being civilians. Tens of millions of people died due to genocides (including the Holocaust), starvation, massacres, and disease. In the wake of the Axis defeat, Germany and Japan were occupied, and war crimes tribunals were conducted against German and Japanese leaders.

The Ussr is kinda heart wrenching. If you were born a male in 1923 in the Soviet Union you would’ve been given a 25% chance of staying alive after ww2 in 1946. A lot of those males who died didn’t get to have kids of their own and that caused a huge gash in its population, if you look at statistics in the 1950’s and 60’s there is little to no change but if you were to get into the 90’s and 21st century you’ll see that death rates are succeeding birth rates, and in 2020 Russias fertility rate got worse when covid hit.

I'm not a fan of USSR, but without their big sacrifice, Germany won't lose. The western allied took the easy part compare to USSR.

An Austrian painter declared war on Poland. So you're an Indian fighting in Singapore against Japanese for the British.

For the people who dont know, indonesia was a dutch colony for many decades. The Indonesian resistence fighters and the dutch army have been in a great war till the independence of indonesia. Also the japanese occupation of indonesia and the dutch mass murdering of independence fighters costed a lot of lifes. As a Dutch person i think this should never been forgotten.

Now for pretty sad fact about Poland:
If number itself (6 mln) isn't disturbing enough, take into consideration, that it was 22, 2% of entire Polish population (in comparison to 1939), which is the highest percentage number in WW2. If similar war happened today, Poland would lose 8, 88 milion people (and if similar thing happened on American soil, 73, 26 milion Americans would die). Also, due to this war, 90% of all Polish Jews¹ died - if similar genocide happened to Ukrainians in Poland, 270 thousand of them would die.
Can it get even worse than that? Yes, of course - according to PZU estimations from 1945, Poland contracted 840 bilion USD (today it would be almost 14 trillion USD) worth of civilian damage - which means that no military equipment, soldier or whatever was counted, but only civilian buildings and cultural monuments. With this amount of money you could buy 3 Airbus A380 planes and still have a lot to spare. It's, of course, money that Poland never actually got, neither from Germany or Soviets (which promised to do so), so 1950's in Poland was pretty much a horror.

¹At the time Polish law defied Jews not as a nationality, but as a religious group. Even at the time people were identifying themselves not as, ,Poles and Jews", but by, ,Catholics and Jews".

There are no winners and losers in war…just survivors and casualties. Awesome animation btw.

China would be in 100M casualties if we count from the start of the second sino-japanese war in 1937, which some historians consider to be the start/prelude of WW2

Indian soldiers in WW2 didn't die for their motherland. They died for the war which wasn't even theirs. They died because the British told them that they would give India independence if they fight for them against the Axis powers. They even fought soldiers who shared the same nationality, i.e. the Azad Hind Fauj which, with the help of the Japanese, tried to overthrow British rule. They, after helping the alliance win the war, got no independence but betrayal. They lost their lives thinking that the British would keep their promise and grant India independence. They fought the soldiers of Azad Hind Fauj, who were also Indians. Imagine how bad someone would feel while killing the soldiers who belong to the same nation as theirs. Have same motives of achieving Independence from the British rule. And all this done just to get betrayed. Costing life for nothing but treachery. Jai Hind 🇮🇳!

It’s interesting to see just how little Australia suffered in comparison to many areas, and we did a reasonable job in the war, at least making how long it would last shorter.

It's sad so many died in war, India on other hand was didn't even fight for themselves(was colonized by England, so forced to fight)nd lost so many people for nothing. One thing common in war people die, I hope in future no more wars.

When I decided to ask my grandfather about 2WW, he said that it would be better if I didn’t find out, IT WAS HORRIBLE! (He was at the front for the USSR and now we live in Russia)
Then he fought near Moscow and was in the blockade of Leningrad for 871 days. He ate bits and pieces of bread, drank ice-cold water. A lot of people lay dead on the road and no one removed them. One of the many girls 10-14 years (who was in the blockade) kept a diary in which she wrote down the dates of the death of her relatives. There was simply no way to survive, and who survived WILL NEVER FORGET IT. Now we always celebrate Victory Day on May 9 for many years, it’s a pity that they mention England, India, (the USA, which even wants to say that it played a greater role than the USSR, although this is not true (ಥ﹏ಥ)).

It's crazy to think how bloody this war was to not just Jews and Germany, but to the Russians, Poles and Chinese, just 3 Nations.

We think on how bloody the war was to the Allies and Soviets, but overlook on the deaths China and Poland had to sacrifice.
