For those who don't know. Japan - in 1973 an area of land near Nichinan City was designated as “experimental forestry” and one of the experiments was to try and measure the effect of tree spacing on growth. 50 years later here is the result. It's the same number of trees in each ring yet each ring is smaller the closer to the center you get. It's really noticeable that the trees closer together are smaller, while the ones on the outer rings are significantly taller with a larger diameter crown.

The outer circle of trees that are bigger would mean possible opportunities for earlier harvesting. I think this is an important experiment.
Though I don't know why they didn't know that when you crowd plants, the yield is less. A basic principle for planting gardens.
