Why is the island of Borneo divided? #shorts #geopolitics #countriesoftheworld #maps

Borneo, the third largest island in the world after Greenland and New Guinea, is divided into three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and the small Sultanate of Brunei. The Philippines claim the eastern part of Sabah, a Malaysian state previously known as North Borneo, but that case is still disputed.

But why is the island divided?

For starters, there is no real "Bornean" identity. The island is home to many different ethnic groups: Malay, Chinese, and Banjar, just to name a few. So there isn’t anything pushing it together.
And as for the borders of the countries, Malaysia and Brunei were formerly part of the British Empire, while Indonesia was part of the Dutch Empire, and when the era of colonialism ended, the newly formed countries adopted the old borders drawn by the empires.

As a person from Borneo thx for the video! Also small fact:

When the Japanese took control of the whole of Borneo in WWII, it was the only time when the island was fully unified under a single rule

Borneo is a very large island, it never had a united identity, each ethnic groups like Malays, Banjars, Dusuns, Melanaus, Idahans, Tidungs, Kutais, Berau, Bulungans etc all have their own kingdoms. The Indigenous "Dayaks" (not a single ethnic group) also have their own territories and identities. There are hundreds of languages and dialects spoken there. Not to mention the island used to have a strong headhunting tradition.

Correction: Sabah is not claimed by the entire Philippine nation but by the descendants of the Sultanate of Sulu, who leased the territory to the British

After the Second World War, British rule in Sarawak was only 17 years old and got independence day in 1963

Before the second world war, Sarawak was indeed a country from 1842 to 1946

we have king James Brook from England who was the first person to become the head of the government of Sarawak

Greetings from the state of Sarawak, Malaysia

remember this [🖤❤️💛+🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿+👑=kingdom of Sarawak]

I understand its a short, but some context, Brunei was once a huge empire controlling the northern coastline of Borneo from the entirety of Sarawak to Sabah (North Borneo) which is why Sarawak and Sabah does not have a Sultan.

Edit: the empire also covered Sulu

Everyone keep saying Brunei once ruled the entire island, but that's not the truth. Don't forget that the southern part of the island ruled by the Kingdom of Banjar.

Malaysia should never have ceased payments back in 2013 if the agreement had no fixed duration. The British are to blame here. If Malaysia truly wants Sabah, they should never halt their payments unless a new agreement with the Sulu is established.

The British signatories who administered the BNBC are to blame here, acting as though they owned the land. Also, the fact that Malaysia never stopped paying until 2013 only indicates that the land was never theirs.

Sultunate of Sulu, now part of the Philippines, might win the case.

Sabah was never part of the Philippines. It was part of the former Sultanate of Sulu. All the agreements and contracts was made between the Sulu sultanate and Malaysia, not the Philippines.
