In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, we're going back to another DJ Dan (Guest DJ) selection. I'm listening to the studio recording of The Grudge by Tool from their 2001 album Lateralus. As with many other of this band's songs, I found this song to be primal, hard hitting, powerful, and unwavering. Tool is such a unique band! Come along for the ride...

The beauty of Tool is everyone gets a solo. The genius of Tool is everyone plays their solo at once.

“I think Maynard just let it go.”

Thank you!!!! You’re the first reactor I’ve seen to get that. That is what that scream represents to me: the act of “letting go” of The Grudge.

This is my favorite song.

Saw them live on that tour, with a friend. Tool opened with The Grudge, my friend had not heard it yet : at the crazy end of the song, he had tears in his eyes, completely overwhelmed by the intensity. I remember him tell me : "that what it's got to do"... Amazing memories...

They’re so good at sitting on a theme or in a little harmonic space and just developing it and letting it breathe. That takes a lot of guts, maturity and most of all musicality.

Am I the only one that finds it hilarious that Maynard is screaming his lungs out at 9:51 and Doug calls out the note it's done in?

This is one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. It's the opening track to one of the best records ever. And your breakdown of this song is absolutely flawless! It took me multiple listens to understand the rhythm. Thanks for the excellent reaction Doug!

I love how you can just pick up the exact note, key, and timing. In addition to the constant stink face.

"I think Maynard just let it go." It's a well known fact that Queen Elsa from frozen has always been a huge Tool fan.

This was the first song I ever heard by Tool, bought the album just after it came out based on a glowing review in a hifi magazine, of all things. My jaw hit the floor and I became a lifelong fan on the spot.

The last 40 seconds or so of The Grudge is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard...

The problem is that a grudge is only in your head
The "aggressor" most of the time isn't even aware of it so you're really just suffering alone.
Here in Sao Paulo we say that if you hold a grudge for too long, is the same of building an apartment for the other person inside your head, they're "living there", in your head, for free and you could fill it with something way better.

You have become easily my favorite reactor on YouTube.
Why?
Because you don't merely help us to identify the key and meter.
You are impressively adept at identifying and understanding the meaning, the effect and the purpose of the artist's intent.
Simply put, when you listen to it you "get it". I love that!

Thank you.

This is one of those songs where, when you hear it for the first time, once it ends you find yourself letting out of breath you didn't even know you were holding

Literal goosebumps watching you experience this one for the first time. This was actually the first Tool song I ever heard, it didn't click at first. I didn't honestly really think I'd like Tool when I began listening to this. The friend who lent me the CD Lateralus said "keep listening over and over until you get it." After about 8 listens, I started the CD with this song for the 9th time, and suddenly, like an awakening, I had the "OH MY GOD" moment and never looked back...I got it finally. Favorite band ever since that day. Spiral out, keep going.

I’m 62 years old. Love these fellows! Saw them Live at the Gorge, about 12 years ago. Sooo mind blowing.

Hearing this song the first time was a visceral experience for me. I knew Tool for many years prior to this (I had Undertow and Aenima) and I bought Lateralus as soon as it came out. I could've skipped straight to Schism as it was the only track I knew since it was already released as a single. But this was the days of CD and I liked to have the first listen of my new albums go all the way through so I don't miss anything good. Hearing the sound of the electrical motor starting was a hint of the relentless machine that was to follow. It was so easy to get lost in the raw power and throbbing rhythm, and by the end of the song I was sitting mouth agape, astonished at what I have heard. The Grudge was immediately my favorite song and has remained so for 20 years.
