It's amazing that Fernando, who is the protagonist of this incredible battle, in a completely different era of F1, is still racing and is able to narrate this experience to all of us watching.

Not explicitly mentioned in the video, but the remarkable aspect of Alonso's strategy was that he was deliberately keeping Schumi close by over-slowing into the low-speed corners. The Ferrari had better lateral grip and ultimate top speed, but the Renault V8 had more low-end torque and hence better initial acceleration onto the straights. So Alonso basically turned the last several laps into a series of drag races which he knew he could win. The trick was that after each drag race, he had to slow back down to prevent Schumi from carrying extra speed through the next tight turn.

Every racer's instinct is to protect a lead by trying to build a gap to his opponents behind - the bigger the gap, the safer you feel. But Alonso did the opposite. It takes immense composure and confidence to *intentionally* keep your opponent close behind, especially when that opponent is a 7-time world champion in a faster car. That's why this drive was legendary.

Schumacher was so humble. He was a top tier driver and to say “thats why he won and why I got second” is such a compliment to Alonso.

Having had the chance to work with Alonso closely for 3 weeks for the Virtual Le Mans in 2020 was an absolutely amazing experience, the man is extremely dedicated and never gives up, even for a virtual race many real drivers would brush aside. He was on for 4-5 hours every night on discord doing stints after stints, for 3 weeks.
The guy lives and breathes racing and I think he deserves so much more than what he has achieved.

One of my favorite F1 races of all time! I remember watching this that Sunday morning of my mother's funeral in 2005. All the family was sitting in the living room, somber, waiting on the limo to take us to the church and I was sitting on the floor going crazy hoping Alonso could keep it in front of Shumi. I vividly remember Alonso constantly looking out his mirrors, and Shumi taking different driving lines to get clean air after a charge on Alonso. It was a great escape for me on that memorable day...
