HOW I BECAME A HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS CAR DRIVER
Показать описание
My road to becoming a Rally Car Driving Instructor started back in 2000. For my 40th Birthday my wife bought me a track day experience at the Dover International Raceway.
If you’ve ever wondered why the heck I can give you driving hints and tips to drive fast and safe while having fun, this is the video for you. While I don’t like to shout about my experience too much, I guess it's time I shared my story with you.
I’ve had the pleasure and fortune to have been taught by some talented, fun, and exciting professional drivers over the years. I share with you some of their top tips they passed onto me, and how they contributed to my learning experience.
I share the story of when I nervously turned up at my very first track day experience back in 2000, and had to learn how to get into the car through the driver's side window!! hahaha, and how I then years later equally as part of buying my Porsche Carrera S in 2009 I was offered to attend a HPDE (High Performance Drivers Education) for a weekend. So again nervous and anxious I stepped out as a beginner performance driver. Chuck was my instructor, he was great, I was really fortunate to have his instruction… and I earned a ‘solo’ woo hoo, meaning we celebrated me being at a stage to be trusted out driving on the track on my own… well almost, as I had Chuck’s voice ringing in my ear :D
So over the next few years I had a ton of fun learning from some super talented people, Cass Whitehead the chef instructor at Porsche Track Experience (link below) who really taught me about being smooth, and driving in the wet and analysing my driving stats! John Lewis, another instructor at the Porsche Track Experience, John really taught me how to follow the different lines around the track, and weight management, that tire contact on the pavement and maximized my contact, as well as micro adjustments in the steering. I also learned from Dan Clarke, he really helped me with my steering input, wow this is an insight really cranking my steering wheels. Racing car driver Dane Cameron instructed me too, he pushed me on speed, encouraging me to handle the faster speed, and how to manage when I’m braking.
I loved learning to drive faster and safer…. And that was great… for a while!
Then typically my sports car driving seemed to plateau, so this is quite normal, so it was time that I upped my game and found ways to improve my rally DE skills.
Time for something new to push my skills and advance further!
At one event I met a guy who works with professional drivers but in a simulator, Kelly Jones from Race Craft1 (link below). So we had a lot of fun in this simulator training (subscribe for an interview with Kelly coming soon!). Kelly is a retired fighter pilot. He became an instructor in the air force and transferred into Driver training and works with professional Sports Car Drivers. It was a different experience from being in a car, but you really get to learn something new, for me this was, well, hahaha how about you watch the video and find out what happened.
Soon after this I once again stepped out as a beginner on a track but this time in the driving instructor training, where you learn about how to teach… I’ll leave that story for the video too!
Hope you enjoy this story of how I got to become a High Performance Driver Instructor.
