We had a folk group in the mid 1960's at Manchester University. In 1972, our banjo player was married to a girl from County Cork and during the evening reception festivities, the groom came up to me and said "for old times sake, let's give them a good rendition of "Raglan Road", taking alternative verses"..I was brought up to the stage area and he told the assembled gathering of our former folk group and of both our involvement in it. We both knew the sang off by heart and Luke Kelly from the Dubliners always gave a stirring rendition of it that we admired the most. Raglan Road is a song full of feeling and it was like old times sake for both of us. It seemed to go down well, as when I returned to my table, no less than five brimming glasses of Guiness awaited me and the mother of the bride said that I was now an honorary Irishman"

Doesn’t this represent the best of us in so many ways - a much loved poem/song written by a national treasure many years ago (which seems to have got even better with the years), performed by two singers of the best, supported by a cast of the talents -including John himself and overseen by Luke on the background screen. Having stumbled across this just now in a dark dour early November evening in the middle, of a global pandemic, it would lift the saddest heart. Those who were there were truly privileged. The heads thrown back, the eyes closed, the lived in voices - god it doesn’t get much better. Thank you - like others I am quite emotional now.
