In my fantasy universe, the antagonists have a type of magic that I just call “Blood Magic”.
Basically, if any blood is exposed in your body, the antags can paralyze you and suck up their powers to use it for themselves. This works because their magic flows in their blood.
There’s a battery for how much the antagonists can use the powers, and the battery only runs out while the antagonist is currently using the magic. While the magic of the antags is diminished, the protags magic is slowly restored. The bigger the wound/more blood that was drawn, the bigger the battery. Though there is no way for them to check the battery themselves, which means they have often run out of their powers in the middle of a battle.
Your magic can be fully restored anywhere from 3 days, to an entire year.
