The people running NYC been stopped caring about mom & pop stores a long time ago. They've been pricing out a bunch of traditional spots. As they want NYC to look perfect, clean and futuristic. Along with bring in spots that they can charge twice or triple the rent.

All the amazing establishments that defined NYC culture. Have been slowly getting sweeped under the rug. As the new people in charge only care about more money and more money.

I prefer mom and pop shops
Better items treatment and your helping people you know
Its also an experience because their all so different not like soulless chain spots
But practically i prefer chain stores because their cheaper faster and more convenient, they are more likely to have online capabilities and its quicker in and out.
I give up the quality of mom and pop shops for the bigger convenience and consistency of chain stores

Even people outside of NYC feel this way. Growing up in a small city in the south, everyone loved mom and pop restaurants. I was usually the only one who hated them. And hate them I did (and still do). Passionately. That's one reason why I now live in NJ rather than in the city - it's easier to get to chain stores and restaurants here.
