Getting aid into Tonga is 'critical in this initial stage'

More ships and aircraft carrying aid will soon arrive in Tonga following the aftermath of the volcanic eruption and tsunami.

The first flights from Australia and New Zealand landed on Thursday carrying food, water, medicine, telecommunications infrastructure, and clean up equipment.

UNICEF Australia’s Director of International Programs Felicity Wever says UNICEF has about “10 metric tonnes” of supplies on the HMAS Adelaide heading for Tonga.

“Largely it’s water sanitation and hygiene kits, water purification tablets, buckets and containers for water, contamination of water is still a huge risk for people’s health in Tonga,” Ms Wever told Sky News Australia.

“There’s also recreation kits for children on that ship; we are always concerned about children.”

Natural disaster such as this show that China needs more aircraft carrier groups and rapid reaction ready forces in the region to provide aide to civilian disaster victims.
