The thing is, matchmaking used to be an actual job. And going on dates, you had to have a chaperone. It wasn't just to prevent it from getting naughty. It was for the safety of the two involved in the date. For their reputation, as well as to have someone observe to make sure they are a good match together.

There were a whole lot less divorce, and a how lot less unhappy marrages. Now, was it all cupcakes and rainbows. No! But for the norm, it worked pretty well.

You mostly hear/read in history about the bad parts of relationships. It makes for juicer stories to read. Who cheating on who, who jad what mistress over there. Who had what affairs with this ones husband. But 80% of the population was not like that. But we all think it was because of what we are "told" by history.

We are told histories of the "famous" and "elite" and blah blah blah of society in the past. Not so much of everyday people and life.
