This and the previous video perfectly answered a question that has been festering in my brain for the last couple of weeks. A guitar-playing friend suggested that we (I play the piano) have a go at the song “Let It Grow” by Eric Clapton. Being a guitar-player, he gave me the chords. Now the verse is in B-minor but the chorus is in B-major, however, I’ll ignore the chorus here, as it was straightforward. I worked out that B-minor has two sharps, F# and C#. The B-minor chords for the verse puzzled me, they are as follows:

Bm-F#-D-E-G-A

Only thinking of the natural minor scale, I could not understand why there was an F#-major (with an A# for the third) and an E-major (with a G# for the third) in this progression. Of course, now I see that they come from the melodic minor. Furthermore, I had not realised that it was optional to change between the minor scales (natural, harmonic, melodic) within one song/progression, but that is also well illustrated in the “Let It Grow” chord progression: F#-major has the A# and E-major has the G#, however at the end of the progression there is G-major and A-major without the sharps!

Quick question about the steps to create the melodic minor chords. Do i first look on the circle of fifths for sharps/flats. Then alter the keys and do i then raise the 6th and 7th key and build the chords on that or do i build the chords first and then alter the 6th and 7th scale degree( for melodic minor)?
