My personal headcanon is that there are no enemies and no timer in WAR. What we’re seeing is Peppino’s mind losing some definition of what is and isn’t real due to his PTSD from the war. Every enemy we see is just a specter from his past, the timer just him remembering needing to escape

I have this headcannon that the level WAR are only the memories that peppino has when he sees the gun, and the actual level is only that tiny first room

It's implied that ticking timers trigger his PTSD like bombs about to explode. It definitely recontextualizes Pizza Time in every level.
